Nutrition Qualities of an Energy Bar

We have reviewed every granola/snack bar, protein bar, and energy bar on the market. Based on our review, to qualify as an energy bar, a bar must contain at least 250 calories per bar or be labeled as an ‘energy bar’. In our comprehensive Energy Bar Brand Nutrition Comparison Chart, we included all energy bars available in-store or online in Canada.

When Should I Use an Energy Bar?

Energy bars are best suited to fill the gaps in a healthy diet when meeting nutrition needs from food alone is not possible. For example, during long-duration physical activity such as hiking or cycling, to gain weight, or to meet nutrition needs that are higher than average(ex. an athlete). Energy bars are generally not necessary for the average adult, as they can meet their nutrition needs from food.

ENERGY BARS vs. PROTEIN BARS

The nutrition content of protein and energy bars can differ depending on the brand. One key difference is in the number of total calories per bar. We have classified bars with less than 250 calories per bar as protein bars or snack bars. Any bar with more than 250 calories per bar is considered an energy bar. When comparing macronutrient content, protein bars may be similar in protein content to energy bars. However, energy bars are often higher in carbohydrates and fats than protein bars. Each bar included in our comparison chart above contains more than 250 calories per bar. If you’re interested in protein bars, check out our Protein Bar Nutrition Comparison chart here
